HOTHEADS

Twelve-year-old Geneva Michellini lives in a shack on the edge of town where, in addition to strict, old-fashioned parents and a moody older sister, she has to put up with a crazy grandfather (Babu) who speaks no English, is filthy and uncouth at table, chases parked lovers with a rifle, and beats Geneva for going out dressed like a ""hussy"" on Halloween. But when Babu gives her his old tooth Geneva buys a chain and wears it lovingly around her neck, and when she discovers that Babu is the secret vandal who is sabotaging construction of a nearby road and shopping center she becomes determined to protect him and ends up in a heap of trouble, taking the blame herself. Geneva and Babu are the hotheads of the family and if the old man is more of a stereotype, Geneva is so full of clenched energy that every scene--the Halloween costume judging where she's ridiculed though she'd expected to win, a disastrous teenage party at the home of her sister's rich boyfriend, the family kitchen where, one blissful evening, everyone bursts into song and dance--is seen with her scrappy intensity. She's sure to make her presence felt.
