Gene Schoor, a seasoned sports writer, has tackled the dramatic career of Red Schoendienst in a fast paced emphatic style. Red's intense drive toward the baseball diamond became evident in his refusal to permit doctors to remove his eye after a serious injury incurred as a CCC camp worker. His remarkable recovery was the first battle won against seemingly insurmountable odds. His successful stint with the Cardinals through three managements climaxed by the All Star game of 1950, his trades to the Giants and then to the Braves and finally his second eye injury and bout with tuberculosis are all handled in simple highlighted terms. In The Man Who Fought Back (Messner, p. 113) Al Hirshberg's treatment is decidedly more detailed with many more descriptive baseball scenes. The reader can make his choice.
