The author of Mountain Girl and other novels for young girls about the Southern mountain country, tells the story of Cynthia Bailey, who, with her folksy, home-loving family, regards anyone from over the mountain as ""foreign"". They must adjust to the inevitable flooding of the valleys and hills when the government builds a huge dam which brings power to the primitive-living people. With fine appreciation for the beauties, the songs, the sturdy independence of these hardworking natives of an isolated region of the U. S., the author tells a story which can reach a fairly wide age range from mature eleven year olds well into the teens. Interesting background material, simple writing that still conveys a feeling for the speech patterns of the area, this is a contribution to the field of regional literature. Schools and libraries will use it.
