This is an anecdotal, rather disorganized, account of the black, brown, grizzly, and polar bears of North America. Their physical descriptions, histories, and habits are haphazardly related along with many anecdotes based on the family experiences of this husband-wife team, their conversations and reading. The emphasis is on bear against man, man against bear, with all sorts of brutal, unpredictable attacks described and many hunting feats and records to balance the score. There is a great interest in statistics throughout: how big, how killed, who did it, and when. The book's appeal seems to be more of game hunters than young naturalists.
