AMPHIBIANS AS PETS

The Zapplers are clearly amphibian lovers, and their celebration of these animals' wonderful versatility, adaptability and, yes, even looks (""Toads and frogs have really beautiful eyes"") does success in convincing us that they are something special. The introduction to both modern and extinct amphibians and the brief paragraphs devoted to common species are less comprehensive than, say, Conant and Peterson's Field Guide, but the Zapplers' advice on the care of amphibious pets -- particularly with regard to providing a varied diet and treating common illnesses -- is second to none. Answers to more general questions -- like how frogs of the same species recognize each other at mating time -- and many identifying photographs and drawings showing anatomical details make this an attractive and useful guide for the casual reader, as well as a must for pet owners.
