A good tale with more than its quota of human and animal appeal, in the story of two hardbitten old codgers nursing a spite feud on neighboring farms in New Jersey, of a spunky orphan boy, Spike, of a horse, and of harness racing. Spike's uncle had been wiped out by his wealthy neighbor, and Spike determines to cancel the debt. He gets his grounding in horses and racing through the stable boys and the laughter of Boole's trainer; he sires their mare, Lady, by one of Boole's prize stallions, and breeds the ""phantom filly"" who eventually wins fame and fortune for him.
