Another comic-strip overstatement from Chesbro, who once again almost kills off the Frederickson brothers, Mongo and Garth, and actually does kill off many of the assorted evil-doers who get in their way. When Mongo's old friend, FBI agent Michael Burana, drowns in the semi-artsy, newly right-wing town of Cairn, New York, Mongo is suspicious, and soon runs afoul of police chief Dan Mosely, who's been bought and paid for by megamillionaire, right-winger loony Elysius Culhane; the pacifist Community of Conciliation and its most vociferous partisan, 60's folk-singer Mary Tree; the Trexes, a father-and-son gun-wielding duo; Jay Acton, Culhane's alter ego and possessor of a peculiar birthmark (!); and perennial do-gooder Harry Peal (a matching birthmark!), who's soon dispatched by a baddie. What was Burana working on? A KGB plot to infiltrate the far right, it turns out, but before we can sort out the patriots from the moles, Mongo is assaulted-and-battered; Garth falls in love; and a Hudson River ambush is staged that involves everybody--including, of course, the as-always triumphant brothers. Noisy, simplistic, and old-hat (orphans with birthmarks?). Chesbro needs a rest, and Mongo needs a new job.
