This volume arises out of a study of the new metropolis authorized by General Assembly of the United Presbyterian Church, and carried on by the Institu of Ethics and Society of the San Francisco Theological Seminary. The author is minister of the Mariner's Temple Baptist Church of New York City, and one of the ablest and sociologically best informed churchmen working in the field of the church. The scope of the study is indicated by the chapters: The Face of Urban Renewal; In Search of Metropolis; Issues Raised by the of Metropolis; The Politics of Urban Renewal; Churches in Urban Renewal; and the Church's A Theological Afterword, a Note on Methodology, and a Selective Bibliography complete the book. The approach to the problems of urban and to the part in it is realistic, and thorough-going in its analysis; and the proposals the church's participation are concrete. In style, the writing is clear, direct and forceful. The book should attract a large reading among the many people concerned for urban renewal, and its audience should not be limited strictly to church leaders. An important contribution to the field.
