JESUS AND THE KINGDOM

This study undertakes an account of the Biblical concept of the Kingdom of God, both as promise and as fulfillment, in terms of God's relation to history. After a survey of the development of Biblical scholars' view of Eschatology, the author deals briefly with the Promise of the Kingdom as set forth in the Old Testament. The larger part of the work is then given to an exposition of the idea of the Kingdom as set forth in the teachings of Jesus recorded in the Gospels: The Kingdom as Reign or Realm, as Present as Dynamic Power, as Present as Divine Activity, and as the New Age of Salvation, leading to the Mystery of the Kingdom. The abiding values of the doctrine of the Kingdom of God for theology are succinctly presented, and the relevance of the whole discussion for the church today brings the study to a pertinent close. The author is thoroughly conversant with the literature of his subject, but advances his own views clearly yet without polemic. This should be a substantial addition to the library of ministers and other students of the Bible, concerned for its relevance today.
