In Arizona Territory charged with the surveillance of the San Carlos Indian Reservations as a punishment for accusing powerful men of corruption, Captain Ben Crandall is known as a fighter from Civil War encounters. His reputation as a man of honor comes into question in relation to an old, still provocative flame, the Colonel's wife, who becomes involved with the men who fear his knowledge--that they have supplied the uprising Apaches under Cuchillo with guns and ammunition to foment rebellion. A further chance to acquit himself nobly on the battlefield and with the ladies adds up to a double victory. The hero is incorruptible but inflammable.
