An antique dealer and refinisher who has spent many years in the business (an earlier dollar book From Gunk to Glow has had a veteran sales record) has made all his experience available to the home entrepreneur who would care for, repair or refinish his furniture. There's an opening chapter on how to use the book, and the individual chapters are categorized alphabetically (i.e. under Acquisition- auctions, cabinet shops, inheritance, junk dealers, pickers, etc.). How to restore old finishes, and deal with dents, burns, missing inlays for example. Under Care he enjoins the wax versus polish controversy by arguing that while polish (any mineral oil) provides the best protection against moisture, wax is more suitable for use in the home. He discusses all kinds of repairs, removers, bleaches, stains, finishes on to the fine points of faking, antiquing, stencilling, gold leafing, styles, and woods with the virtues and liabilities of each..... Grotz writes with blunt, good humor which should brighten the busy work ahead.
