Here is the most fantastic scientific document ever produced, one is tempted to say -- a searching into that mystic Empire of the Snakes, ghostly brotherhood of Central Africa, by an accredited scientist first sent out under the aegis of the Smithsonian-Chrysler Expedition to Tanganyika. His collaborator is assistant to the President of the American Museum of Natural History....So much for the authenticity of the astounding revelation here made. Carnochan tells the story of his gradual intimacy with the ""Snake Men"" of Central Africa, his eventual initiation (by proxy), his study of divination, of antidotes for snake poisoning, of their knowledge of rainmaking. Legends of the Snake Men, their secret service, their medicinal treatments, despite British opposition. Fascinating reading, fact, fable, tinged with humor. Should have much the same sort of market that Green Hell and The Magic Island achieved in their day.
