CHESTER CRICKET'S PIGEON RIDE

In an 8(apple)"" x 10(apple)"" format that suits the slighter content, Seldon's Cricket in Times Square begins to miss the countryside and soon finds himself following a sycamore-tree smell to nearby Bryant Park. There, after a hairy crossing of 42nd St. that takes five pages to complete, he chirps blissfully and attracts, with his music, an admiring pigeon. Lulu, the pigeon, then takes him for a spin that affords some lofty full-page views of Manhattan as well as another thrill when he falls from atop the Empire State Building, dropping several flights before she catches him. All this provides some idle diversion at the tourist level, but it's old-hat picture-book fare and not up to Chester's debut performance.
