Basketball fans may be surprised to find out that aggressive center Dave Cowens, who fouled out of fifteen games his rookie season with the Celts, is just a pussycat at heart. Sullivan doesn't give us the guff, though, just downplays Cowens' competitiveness, putting it in perspective as a Celtic team staple. (When the referees called more fouls than usual during the 1976 NBA championship series against the Phoenix Suns, coach Tommy Heinsohn complained that they were ""forcing us out of our regular game."") Opening with a recap of the 1976 Celtics-Suns championship series, Sullivan drops back to trace Cowens' history from parochial high school in Newport, Kentucky, through Florida State University and on to join the Boston team as general manager Red Auerbach's first choice in the 1970 college draft. Sullivan treats Cowens less as a myth than as part of the Celtic machine, and sums up each season's game with a sportwriter's analytical eye.
