SCOBIE

..Scobie, an intellectual, a man who thinks himself into inaction, is commanding a platoon in the Australian army in New Guinea during World War II and waiting for his commission. A new officer arrives--Tolley, a rules and regulations martinet whom the men resent and Scobie hates. The disaster that comes during an attack on a Japanese outpost involves two other men--Payne, a back-alley brute who has become Scobie's creature, and Captain Midwinter, too fond of staying aloof from tense emotional situations. The faults of each man lead to their disaster. For Scobie a court martial for striking an officer; for Payne the shattering realization that he jeopardized his life for a false friend; for Tolley death and for Midwinter a conscience that will never be at ease again. A rough-hewn novel that in spite of its setting is not a war story but a novel of psychological conflict. Uneven, often labored, this first novel after a slow start carries considerable emotional impact and generates interest and suspense.
