Que dire about a man who wrote 1000 short stories and novels before 1939, and over 50 Maigrets since then alternating with others (see ci-dessus). How's that again, combien? This time Maigret's colleague ""Inspector Hapless"" is shot and his pre-unconsciousness last word is ""apparition."" Maigret, gently guided by the ever-thoughtful Mme., pursues neighbors in the quarrier: a banker with a young and beautiful wife, a disappearing girl, and a collection of priceless paintings along with some not on view--graffiti grotesque. The story's firmer than many in the continuity and then there's Maigret whom we feel sure will apparaitre again.
