BATH TANGLE

.....in a flutter of flounces and petticoats, when two Regency heiresses, stepmother Fanny, Lady Spengrove, younger then Serena, her stepdaughter, leave London and the dullness of their mourning to take up residence in Bath. Serena meets an old love, attractive and protective Hector and her secret engagement to him is countered by her arrogant, ex-suitor, now the trustee of her fortune, who becomes the fiance of a young debutante. Spits and spats ensue when Serena takes timid Emily in hand and berates Rotherham for his treatment of the girl; a pretty state of affairs blows up when Emily ""elopes"" with Rotherham's ward -- for Serena goes in pursuit. Hector discovers he really loves Fanny, and Rotherham in strong in his persuasion that Serena loves none but he.... More leisurely incident here than in other Heyer titles, with the social comedy along Thirkell lines, this will give her audience a somewhat slower-paced story that relies more on character than drama and action.
