In Ethan the Shepherd Boy and Ann of Bethany the author established a reputation for good regional atmosphere -- Palestine in Biblical times. Now she has confirmed this with a story set against Cana and Jerusalem at the time of Jesus' visit to the Temple. The hero of the story is 12-year old Joel, discontented with the humdrum life as his father's helper in Cana. He joins a procession of people going to Jerusalem for Passover, and in the group are Mary and Joseph and Jesus. Though Jesus never emerges as a real person, his character moves through the story as a shadow and has its deep effect on Joel giving him strength and joy for his return home.
