Reminiscences of a post World War I life beyond Spain's Sierra Nevada in the Alpujarra and mostly in the small village of Yengen are devoted primarily to the primitive, remote life of the inhabitants, through its love affairs and local politics, its school and church and beliefs and rituals. Brenan's self-exiled days, his precarious economic situation and his lively interest brought him close knowledge of the villagers, their customs, work, play, history, food, beasts of burden, witches and monsters; he got to know Almeria and Granada, the high mountains and Guadix. His accounts of the visits of Lytton Strachey, Virginia Woolf, David Garnett and Roger Fry are a break in this intimate study and an interesting juxtaposition of strangers on the landscape. The fascination of a little known area and the personality of the people and the land make this, through his sharp and vivid observation and style, an unusual pleasure for the seeker of new lands.
