Silver City"" is oil-rich boom-town Aberdeen--where gunsmith/sleuth Keith Calder (The Reward Game, etc.) comes to testify at a trial. . .and winds up agreeing to investigate an unresolved murder case. Who shot top-notch accountant Mary Spalding, using a gun that once belonged to Hugh Donald, a senior executive at Shennilco Oil? Was it someone simply out to destroy Donald (who had a mild feud going with the dead woman) or someone with a genuine motive for killing the computer-savvy accountant? Fairly soon, thanks in part to gun-lore, Keith is convinced that Ms. Spalding was the victim of a veteran hired killer. But the real mystery remains: which of Spalding's classy clients (she was blackmailing/betraying them) hired the hit man? And though the process of elimination is only mildly involving, there are a few jolts of solid action along the way--as Keith finds himself being roughed up at regular intervals. Mid-level Hammond overall--with a quirkily likable cast of characters compensating for a thin plot and minimal suspense.
