Imagine that a rich eccentric, after endowing Yale, hides ten thousand silver dollars just to test the mettle of Scout Troop 10 in following his trail of clues; imagine that they finally find the cache and keep it, tax-free. It takes a stretch of the imagination; it also takes some stretching of the Scout Code and a stretch of luck for Gabby and his pals to survive near-drowning, shipwreck on the deck of a houseboat, a stint as stooges for The Incredible Roberto, master of prestidigitation, a ride down the Merrit Parkway trailing soap suds from a boat on wheels towed by a jalopy, hours of groping, stumbling and falling through the underground passages in a mountain, and a series of shocks in a haunted house. You keep expecting to wake up and find that it's all a bad dream or at least (at best?) a practical joke; the trouble is that it gets to taking itself seriously and the genuineness of money is the final payoff.
