STRANGER FROM THE DEPTHS

No, it's not The Creature From the Black Lagoon despite the uterine polliwog glaring up from the jacket. It's ""Saa,"" a more-than-enlightened representative from a prehistoric civilization. It all started with the freakish tidal wave that almost swept off with Gary and Jordan Howard. Then they found the odd little statuette that turned out to be made of synthetic diamond. But it was teenager Lori Weston who discovered the underwater cave and Saa, entombed in suspended animation. Saa comes from a race whose progress makes mankind's efforts somewhat closer to the monkeys than to the moon. From then on it's fabulous gimmick time as he takes them to his wonder city and they start a search beneath the earth itself for other possible survivors from the past. The first half of the book really moves, the second section--the hunt--bogs down under the weight of the author's top-heavy imagination. It's overcrowded with characters, happenings and resplendent cliche; the young reader is likely to get lost and lose interest.
