Tom and Mary and their mother from Cobh, Ireland, are sent to the U.S. for a summer holiday, and en route- in Dublin- Tom buys a replica of a church round tower from a long-faced peddler as a gift. Once on board, he swaps his model for that of a co-passenger, Polson, and finds a message inside which he eventually relates to an unsolved bank robbery committed more than a year ago in New York. Again twisting the long arm of coincidence, their travels take them to just the cottage in just the Canadian woods to which the message clues them and Tom and his friend unearth the stolen money ahead of the sinister Mr. Polson and an unsuspected confederate... The youngsters are alert and the story sprints right along with amiability and alacrity and a touch of incredibility that may be accepted by readers at this age level.
