Montana, in the 1880's, is harsh country- and just as intractable is Enoch Parnell in a year of griefs and grievances. There is the feud with his neighbors, Linus and Cully Derks, and the defection of one son who had married their sister; there's drought and a range fire, as well as a winter of wind and snow; cattle prices fall, and cattle die- and finally after Parnell's horses are stolen (by his son), the feud ends in death. A rawboned, bitter, active account and an above average handling.
