THE FOREIGNER

From Tamar and Behold Your Queen, the first about Jairus' daughter and the second about Queen Esther, Gladys Malvern turns again to the biblical world to retell the story of Ruth, simply and with a directness that appeals today. It is a chronological telling and begins with Ruth's childhood in Moab. There, as the familiar events that brought her to the house of Elimelech come to pass, the background setting of the two cultures, Hebrew and Moabite, are brought into play as important parts of the story. Along with the heart rending choices Ruth made and the later, dream-come-true quality of her romance with Boaz, there is the bitterness of conflicting beliefs, but with it the palliative of mutual understanding through love. Straightforward and sturdy.
