DANCING STAR: The Story of Anna Pavlova

A biography of Pavlova, from the time she saw her first ballet at 8 and determined to be a dancer -- her impatience to get into the Imperial School in St. Petersburg, the regime there, the seven years of training -- and then a real part. Her immediate acclaim, interest in the strike for solidarity in 1904, the creation of The Swan -- her three years' study under Cecchitti. Her marriage -- ballet history in the making. Her first trip and her choice of world tour instead of the Russian ballet, until her fame became too great for her own good. Failure, financially -- and the Hippodrome as a means to earn funds for her troupe. More fame -- more responsibility -- South America and more troubles. Finally, her sudden death. Good vocational material on dancing, on ballet, though there could have been more descriptive program material. A picture of Pavlova, exquisite for all time -- rather than a criticism of the artist or her art.
