THE MAGIC CIRCLE

An individual, integrated novel of two women -- a holding story of personal disturbance set against the unrest of the century. The story follows the lives of two girls, first at school and college in America, then graduate study in Germany before Hitler, where they identified themselves with a leftish group. Katsie, a professor's daughter, had always been impulsive, independent, secure; in a madcap moment she marries a fellow student, Mide, and splits on the question of returning to America. Alex, restless, rich, falls in love with a professor who leaves her directionless when he terminates the affair. She returns to America with Katsie, and under the influence of a priest, enters a Carmelite order. Then Katsie, back with Mike, recognises Alex' defect and the waste of a life. There is depth to the writing and characterization. Distinctive but limited.
