WINKING AT THE BRIM

No amount of local color (sighting a Nessie-type monster in a wee Highland loch) or vigorous personality (our detective is Dame Beatrice Adela Lestrange Bradley, psychiatric advisor to the Home Office) can conceal the paucity of suspense surrounding the death of Angela Barton. The victim is one of a group of loch-watchers, and each of them has a solid motive for disposing of the gossiping, party-pooping Angela, but which or how or why couldn't matter less. Mitchell (known here only for Watson's Choice but a British standby since 1929) strolls so languidly among her charming/tiresome suspects that the only way to enjoy the scenery is to give up on the story.
