FAMOUS STORIES OF FIVE CENTURIES

A husky omnibus volume, for sale in both juvenile and adult departments. My guess is that its longest life will be on shelves of the public libraries, as it brings together material not readily available, and may serve as stepping stones to other reading. Following an introduction by Walpole come ninety two stories or extracts from novels, a few of them dating back over the five centuries, but the majority belonging to the mid 19th century, with too few of the moderns represented. The selections are primarily English, with a scattering from Twain, Bret Harte, Bierce, Nash, Irving, Hawthorne, and possibly one or two others. Can't see a wide bookshop distribution, but stock for schools and libraries.
