Remember Goldsmith of Florence? Here's -- in fiction form -- much of the background and spirit and some of the characters that came into that book. The central figure is called Carlo Brunelli, but the incidents and characterization follow so closely the life of Benvenuto Collini, that it must be the same. Early 16th century Florence -- a boyhood struggling to comply with his father's dictum that he be a musician -- eventually apprenticed to a goldsmith --the victim of an apprentice plot and a brawl -- escape to Rome --first steps of fame and fortune. The story closes with recognition from France, from England, from his own beloved city. Marvelously real picture of the teeming life of the times and grand adventure.
