If your child must have fancy, and clves and fairies do not meet your approval, here is such a book -- for wool gatherers, choose makers, animal trainers, retired royal cooks, a king and a princess in disguise, and other imaginative trappings, are part of the story. There are no speaking trees or animals, and everything, almost, could have happened somewhere, somehow. But the whole, however, seems undistinguished.
