An anthropological ""Believe it or not"" about the strange way in which primitive people behave -- eating, cooking, sleeping, fighting, worshiping, marrying -- is here compiled by the well-known archaeologist-author. Facts too varied and numerous to digest are presented one after another in a monotonous style. Mr. Baldwin tries to understand as well as to report odd customs but the stigma of strangeness remains: even those who manage to read through the entire text with its careful reminders that our own totems and taboos are also eccentric will have trouble believing that our use of soap and deodorant is as peculiar as the Hottentot's morning toilet (sic) of ""moist cow dung,"" fat, and aromatic herb powder. The bibliography contains further suggested reading about the various cultural groups; an index and glossary are also included. An insubstantial account, occasionally patronizing, which adds nothing to the child's knowledge but may excite his curiosity.
