HOUR OF THE HORDE

If the body can go into overdrive so can the creative spirit, reasons (?) painter Miles Vander, brooding over his bloody, sullen canvases, blocking out people. . . until the sun reddens and emissaries of the Center Aliens, warning of attack by the Silver Horde, select him to absorb the earth's psychic power for the galaxy's defense. Encapsulated with representatives of other ""primitive"" planets, he fights his way up the pecking order to turn the Fighting Rowboat because--it's slighted--into a striking force. Doggedly they gun up their psychic mechanism and, following the Aliens' example, damp savage furies--but the Silver Horde onslaught panics the Aliens' computer and it's the instinct and emotion of the Fighting Rowboat crew, protecting their homelands, that turns the tide. Miles defines overdrive as hysterical strength, and however you construe hysterical, it fits here.
