Roger Maine, on his way to the gas chamber for the murder of his wife, Julia, cheats death after a nearly fatal accident on the road, persuades Norah- recently widowed- of his innocence and the presumed guilt of the divorce detective hired by Julia. They escape vigilant neighbors and a police cordon, reach the home of Julia's stepfather who hated him- but could clear him, and with the evidence of suspected collusion- almost forfeit Roger's thin chance for life to death.... Unbelievably unbelievable, notwithstanding a definite staying power and slick readability.
