An appealing, imaginative story tells why Jesus Christ was born in a stable. Luke the physician visited Bethlehem some years after and found the innkeeper, who explained that the manger was warm, clean, and comfortable, quite the best spot available for Mary's child. This changes the common Christian image of the roughness of the straw making a cradle rude and bare for the son of man who had no place to lay his head, a foreshadowing of the cross, and adds little of value to the Christmas story, but the illustrations by Charles Raymond, based on wood carvings of Tilman Riemenschneider, are appealing and attractive, as is the format of this little book. It is written by the Rev. Gordon Powell, minister of St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church in Sydney, Australia. It would make a most appropriate Christmas gift.
