Gordon Williams wrote two laconic novels which appeared here last year and just about escaped attention. This one however is a randy, vituperative, Ginger Man-ic affair, as told in the sometimes foul-mouthed first person of Peter Reaney, after the defection of his wife, Angela. A public relations executive in show business but full of contempt for his product-one Barry Black, a singer, Peter resigns intermittently, spends most of the time here on a monumental toot in various ""boozers"" and beds--with Mrs. Fanchetti, a rather redolent Italian woman downstairs, with assorted others, and with Jody the wife of his best friend. It's not much of a script (although Paramount will film it--how?) but, in its disorderly, disreputable, and often distasteful fashion, it does achieve a sardoncic vehemence. You will either admire its versatile wordmanship or find it a tiring tirade.
