A regional novel of Canada of some years ago -- with a certain plain, home-spun charm and a likely appeal to the Maria Chapdelaine market. Simple, handling for the story of Michael and Fairlie who marry and build a home by the -apple trees of Red Hugh, a devil, who is responsible for the death of Michael's younger brother and whose infidelity brings sorrow to his young wife; of rural tasks, rafting legs, farming, making sugar, etc. And finally of Michael's decision to go off on a fur trading expedition which brings long months of lonely waiting and worry to Fairlie -- and danger to Michael. Genuine, sincere, but little new has been added.
