BOX AND COX

Impecunious widow Bouncer has a clever way to double her income: she rents the same room to journeyman printer Box, who works nights, and journeyman hatter Cox, who works days--deftly switching their belongings twice a day. All goes well until each proposes marriage and--in her consternation--she accepts both. Then Cox comes home at midday and, for the first time, encounters Box. . . Chetwin narrates this farce in a poker-faced, staccato style with repeated phrases that add a lot to the humor. So do Small's delightful illustrations, their vigorous line capturing to perfection the antics of the debonair but untidy printer, the prim, portly hatter, and the frazzled landlady. Pure fun.
