To the little folk of first or second grade who are smaller than their brothers and sisters, who get lost in the shuffle of bigger boys and girls at school and admire so longingly those who are bigger and older than they, this little book about the ways of growth in Nature should be reassuring. Grace Paull's airy pictures show the winter tree abloom in Spring, the seed becoming a vegetable, the polliwog becoming a frog, the baby duckling becoming an impressive full-scale duck. Next, she shows a small girl working at her ballet lesson. In turn she becomes a ballet dancer when she is grown. Although the pictures are gaily colored and attractive, they lack distinction as illustrations. But the theme itself is a comforting one and in toto it is a good candidate later on for independent reading.
