Once again tortured by his ambivalent emotions, by the suspicion that she loves another man, Bendrix is to learn that Sarah is still in love with him- but has found an alternate answer in her conversion to the Catholic church. And with her death, he still resentfully refutes her belief, only to reach a point of reluctant admission and worn acceptance of the God he had denied...A close, intense experience which flails the fallibility and vulnerability of human love, cauterizes despair with faith, provides a drama which -- if it is more superficial in substance- continues the implications of The Heart of the Matter.
