THE CHURCH MICE ADRIFT

The horde of displaced rats who drive Oakley's church mice from their vestry is depicted here with the same satiating luxuriance he formerly lavished on the church upholstery, and church cat Sampson's scheme for turning out the invaders is as devilish as ever. First, Sampson and the mice lure the rats to a riverside restaurant in an old dollhouse, and then they cut the mooting ropes and send the rat-filled structure drifting down the river and out of their lives. Treating the gluttonous rats to an engorging 34 helpings sets the stage for a teeming orgy of slop, spills, and breakage, and trapping two of the mouse waiters in the drifting dollhouse allows for not only an ingeniously engineered rescue by Sampson but also a wild, rampaging chase beforehand. The fascination may be ambivalent, but it's undeniable.
