by Groucho Marx ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 10, 1959
From small time in the sticks to big time, from vaudeville to Broadway, from theatre to moving pictures, from radio to TV longevity, this famous funnyman devotes himself to stories about his parents, relatives, brothers -- and others, as well as to the grim path that led to their success. A father who could only make ill-fitting clothes, a mother who, once she decided her boys were to go into show business, never stopped pushing them faster, and the long trail of jobs, girls, performances -- and, for Groucho, cigars, that were part of their struggle to survive; the extemporaneous performance that freed them from routine material and extras in their act and then then many Broadway shows -- this is rounded out with sections on the 1929 crash, prohibition, insomnia, sports, seasickness, doctors, etc., etc. This is no ghost job -- nor a snow job -- for Groucho shares his pains of authorship along with his personal history, and the Marx theory -- to keep 'em laughing -- is almost always successful. An entertaining entertainer.
