TEST TUBES AND DRAGON SCALES

This should have somewhat the appeal of Crow's One Hundred Million Customers, for once again there is that sympathetic understanding of Chinese life and philosophy, on the part of a foreigner (a young doctor from Annapolis, Maryland) who is trying to introduce modern medical practices. There is humor and tragedy and horror, in the experiences the doctor encounters in inland China. He learns to ""save face"", he even manages to bulldoze the military into obeying rules. He attempts to teach public health measures; he spoils a beggar's business by healing him; he learns much from an outcast foreign doctor; he tries to keep his hospital out of debt, and so on. Good going.
