A HISTORY OF BIGOTRY IN THE UNITED STATES

You start reading this book with horror that such widespread and violent bigotry could once have existed here; you finish it with the frightening knowledge that it still does exist and to no small degree. Apparently our first settlers brought with them from Europe the live roots of bigotry and soon established a busy trade in persecution. All sects persecuted each other, until gradually religious wrath was directed mainly against Catholics and Jews. Startling, but fully documented evidence of this is given, from the amazing accusations against Al Smith in 1928 to today's anti-semitic slanders. There is interesting material on the organizations and leaders of our time; the KKK, the Silver Shirts, the Christian Front, -- Pelley, Winrod, Deatheredge, Ford, Coughlin and the various mouthpieces of Nazi propaganda. Myers does a pungent, compelling piece of debunking, though the innumerable notes breaking up the main text slow this up for general reading.
