A slight story set in French Canada near Quebec takes place on Nicole's eighth birthday and tells'how, though her family are too poor to give her one, she gets a doll anyway. Trusting to luck, Nicole nets out for a day of strawberry picking and visiting neighbors and on the way manages to see the six white horses and three red-haired ladies necessary to make her wish come true. As one of the red-haired ladies turns out to be a tourist whose daughter would rather be a cowboy than play with dolls, the doll she has is left behind and Nicole, having helped the tourists find a lunching spot, becomes the doll's happy new owner.
