**One can scarcely nay too much in endorsement of this book:-its physical appearance, sturdy cloth binding, clear reading type, fine authentic drawings by Fritz Kredel- and the story itself. The setting is 17th century Quebec, with its trappers and small shopkeepers struggling to hold back the wilderness and the threat of savages in the neighboring forests. A boy comes from France, seeking his father, to an adventurous new world, out off from the outside for eight months each year. Befriended by the pioneer priests and an Indian scout, even the luxury-loving gentry, Philippe feels himself a real habitant and adventurer in his own right before he finds his parents. Readers will love every minute of it and follow the young hero every step of the way. Excellent historical fiction at a young reading level. Highly recommended.
