THE PIG IN THE BARBER SHOP

The story of the Smiths' return trip to Mexico is not a guide or travel book for the conventional traveler but it will delight those who want unexpected sidelights on a country -- and its people. For Mr. Smith says it's horsepoop when he thinks it is horsepoop; he finds history that he will contradict; he makes his stand on bullfighting and the mordida (graft-bribery) (he's against them); he argues about Mexican ways and ours; he wanders around Mexico City more than he does other places -- but he gets around; and he is a thoroughly entertaining traveling companion. His study of Mexican history and books on Mexico gives him targets for sightseeing while his guide gives him offheat interpretations of what he is unable to understand and all his odd bits of foreigner-in-a-strange-land add up to a well lighted picture of our next-door neighbor. A before and after (going there) book to read.
