The multi-volumed Illustrated World of the Bible Library forms the basis of this one-volume work, which should prove a bonanza for the smaller library and for home shelves. While the text is non-theological in approach, the inclusion of the New Testament should be noted, plus the fact that to the extreme fundamentalist the findings of modern archaeology and the subsequent reinterpretation of legend and myth- even of history-will come as something of a shock. But for the average modern this approach to both Old and New testament provides a new dimension of understanding and acceptance of the Biblical lands and people and the text of the Bible. The illustrations- 400 in full color- are drawn from the original volumes. Textual comments on research and findings provide as interesting running commentary and analysis of the agreements and differences, the historical background, the place of Biblical literature in the world of its times. A provocative and beautiful book, which should be top value as a gift item.
