**Expectations are completely fulfilled in this beautifully planned and illustrated history of painting from pre-history to present day modernists. Though its title and its simplicity assigns it to readers of high school age, the breadth and depth with which the authors have related painting, puts it within the interest area of anyone wishing to learn about art, and its basic clarity would make it understandable to eager nine and ten year olds. The approach- through well chosen and well reproduced masterworks (many of which are in color)- is to present painting as part of our life. Art teachers themselves, the authors ask the reader to feel with the painter, how to see why he painted as he did in the epoch that he lived. A primitive cave painting when explained as careful magic to insure luck in the all important hunt- gains a new meaning for the twentieth century; the realism of the renaissance was a natural outcome of increased knowledge; our modern artists are exploring their imaginations. With qualities of a fresh yet ordered scholarliness that plays remarkably on the natural inquisitiveness of young people, this work should see a long life.
