A pair of half-brothers, one good, one bad, hold the keys to the success or failure of a revolution on a Spanish Mediterranean island--in this latest adventure from the author of High Stand, The Black Tide, Solomon's Seal, and many other thrillers. The idyllic peace of the island of Menorca was to have been the backdrop for the commercial success of British expatriate Mike Steele and his pregnant, half-Maltese wife Soo. But Menorca is isolated on the fringe of the new, decentralized Spain, and the islanders are at odds with each other and with foreign residents over the future of their island. The political atmosphere has turned ugly, and the Steeles' marriage has gone sour with the politics--leaving Soo vulnerable to the attractions of Gareth Lloyd Evans, a British naval officer who enlists the couple in his search for the mysterious Patrick Evans. And Mike fantasizes constantly about Petra, a luscious local archaeologist. But the incipient romances go on ice when the island's leading politician is assassinated and Mike is suspected of involvement in the killing. He slips away from the authorities and sails to Malta, where Cdr. Evans' frigate, HMS Medusa, is in port. Mike learns the worst about the evil Patrick Evans and is trapped on Medusa when the ship becomes the target of political sabotage. The two rivals, husband and would-be lover, scuttle out of Malta and steam in a hurry to Menorca--where Medusa becomes the sole defense of NATO interests against a possible move by the Soviet navy. Classic British adventure--with modest characters and a believable plot, mercifully free of high-technobabble. Vintage Innes.
